South Korea: Seoul American Middle School mold and rats

The South Korean Seoul American Middle School for the children of our US Army families stationed there is an embarrassing, dangerous, filthy, rodent-infested, leaky, moldy mess, according to the description in Stars and Stripes, below. Those in charge of the building from the Army end deny health effects, as often seen - but we feel they are either misinformed or playing "defense". We predict this story will make you upset and wonder, if these are the conditions families are subjected to, would it be worth endangering one's children to serve on this military base? This is not the first military families' school or military housing that has been described as so unhealthy. We feel it is about time that the American gov't protected its military families and regular citizens from filthy, unhealthy conditions in US schools, wherever they are found. We invite you to write the US Army about these problems - This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it : Mr. Hoff is the DODDS Pacific, Public Affairs Officer. His supervisor is listed below the article. (SMH)

Excerpts:

"Teachers, parents and administrators described a number of problems at the school, from leaky roofs to doorways that bottleneck when students enter or leave. One classroom is permeated with the smell of raw sewage, they said, and administrators said sewage erupted out of one toilets in their office earlier this year.

According to a PowerPoint presentation prepared for a school meeting, mold grows through carpets, and rats easily enter some buildings and are heard running in the ceilings."

"[DODDS-Pacific spokesman Charly Hoff] said he didn’t know if there had been any other illnesses related to the conditions of the schools, but he did not believe the buildings pose a health hazard.

"I can assure you that if we felt there was a health hazard, we would take very prompt action," he said." (Stars and Stripes)

Mr. Hoff, we can prove it is dangerous - read the WHO guidelines for indoor air quality : dampness and mould (July 2009). (SMH)

TN: Flooding & Lung Health Updates

This advice, put out by the American Lung Association (ALA) of Tennessee, is the best we have seen. The ALA is correct in noting the extreme problems that dampness and water-damage can cause with respect to human health. They are citing IOM and WHO information about mold and dampness from the CDC's mold and health website pages that we know has been recently added at SMH urging, with the positive influence of new CDC Director, Dr. Thomas Frieden. During the last CDC administration, a malady that showed up in so many hurricane victims, "Katrina Cough", was blamed on stress, which seems ridiculous, but happened in an atmosphere of governmental coverups related to dampness, mold, and health. It is important to be told the truth. We are starting to see that, though the CDC still can improve their mold website and add new development of asthma, immune system and neurological problems, and infections (in previously healthy people) to the list of health effects from mold and dampness, among others.

Our hearts go out to those experiencing the floodwaters and massive rainfall in TN. We hope the schools there (and across the USA) also heed this advice regarding dampness and floodwater cleanup. It is not business as usual once the floodwaters recede. That is when mold prevention begins, with aggressive action! Anyone helping out or working on these buildings needs full protective gear, when possible. See our Mold Remediation section to learn more (SMH).

Scourge of asthma acute in New England

Indoor dampness in schools = new cases of asthma

This Boston Globe article. below, describes findings from a brand new study showing how New England leads the nation in asthma, which is poorly controlled. We think that New England leads the nation in asthma cases (1 in 10 children) due to the age of its buildings, particularly its old, leaky schools. The World Health Organization, in its WHO Guidelines to Indoor Air Quality: Dampness and Mold (July, 2009), found an association between indoor dampness and development of NEW cases of asthma (WHO Guidelines, p. 72).

The formula is: INDOOR DAMPNESS AND MOLD IN SCHOOLS = EPIDEMIC OF ASTHMA IN GENERAL POPULATION (20% of the nation's citizens occupy schools on weekdays, ultimately, all citizens cycle through our schools). (SMH)
