Mold, dangerous chemicals such as formaldehyde, and terrible odors are reported in FEMA trailers. It took the federal government over two years to determine these were unsafe, long after the complaints started. This could have been taken care of in a few days. The people inside the toxic trailers endured a hellish existence, meanwhile, with many ill and some dead. Sound familiar? This is what it is like for those inside sick school portables and buildings, often with no effective government help, whatsoever. Apparently, the people inside toxic government buildings are not the priority. (SMH) |

"It's the latest incident involving allegations that CDC's scientific findings on environmental issues are being watered down."
"The very people they're looking to for answers have been censored," [De Rosa] said. (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
One of the foremost reasons that the American public and legislators remain uninformed about the hazards of damp buildings and mold is the reluctance of the United States CDC (Center for Disease Control) to take a strong stance on educating the public about the extensive, existing literature on the topic. The CDC is charged with the protection of the public from and the monitoring of emerging public health threats. Sick Building Syndrome and mold-related illness has not been adequately addressed by the CDC, throughout the five decades since these illnesses emerged, caused by a change to unhealthy building designs and materials that began in the 1950's. As a result, it is estimated that many millions have been sickened, with little recourse for injuries or help from public health agencies, environmental health agencies, the CDC, OSHA, NIOSH, or the medical establishment. This can be directly blamed, ultimately, on the Center for Disease Control's suppression of science and avoidance - which seems to be their modus operandi.
Reading the following articles about how the CDC avoided identifying the illness caused by toxic FEMA trailers and appears to have punished a longtime, head scientist for the CDC division of toxicology and environmental medicine for raising questions about environmental conditions causing cancer provides a glimpse into how the CDC politicizes health threats. This example illustrates how the CDC does NOT protect the public, contrary to what it is charged with doing, which may be considered a betrayal of the public trust.
Under these present circumstances, it is no wonder that so many are falling ill in sick, damp buildings, with no prevention or strategies to address these problems in place.
We have listed CDC's Health Goals, following these articles, with suggestions for action you may take, to ask for an investigation related to the CDC's avoidance and suppression of the public health threat related to our sick school (and other) buildings. (SMH) |

Those heroes are the parents of three families who filed a federal lawsuit against the Houston Independent School District Dec. 14 on behalf of their children and many other children in HISD. All the parents named in the lawsuit have children attending Key Middle School, and many other parents throughout the district are seeking to be named plaintiffs as well" (Houston Chronicle). |

The Center for School Mold Help (SMH) provided written commentary during the development of this bill, last spring and summer, educating the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee on the problems schools face with dampness and mold. The bill was further developed and passed both the Senate and House, inserted into the Energy bill, now signed into law. This begins a new day, where we shall see a US government focus on healthy school environments, something lacking to date.

CLIFF DAVIS OF Liberty holds son Ryan, 2, at home. His physical condition at times makes it hard for Davis to play with his toddler.
Jeanne Sager | Democrat
Read about Cliff's condition and consider that he works in a school district cited for 3 out of 3 unhealthy schools by NIOSH several years ago. The Liberty School District has not made the building healthy or moisture free, to date - and in fact, may have disturbed mold colonies by doing things incorrectly. We think this case of mysterious neurological problems may be linked with a highly toxic building that Cliff has been seen working in. It is curious that this article doesn't mention the three sick schools in the Liberty School District.
For more Liberty sick-employee problems, read about Angela Page in our Real Testimonies section. On Tuesday, December 11th, 2007, Ms. Page may be fired by her school board, the latest insult to her after many years of dedicated community and school service to Liberty's youth and citizens.
SMH calls for the Liberty parents and community to stand up for health and ethical conduct! |
