New study on school infrastructure PDF Print E-mail
Latest News

We agree with AFT that healthy school buildings are imperative for students and staff. Moldy, damp schools are toxic and have been associated with chronic ill health, destruction of the immune system, asthma, fibromyalgia, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, blindness, and even death in the occupants. It is a national shame that we force students and staff to choose between an education or careers and health.  President Obama's interest is quite encouraging, though we hope that construction, rather than remediation, doesn't begin on moldy school buildings. If it is not done in a manner that controls contamination, the occupants can become sicker. We hope you will visit Remediation, one of our site sections, describing how it may safely be accomplished.

A new study (2008)"  "School Infrastructure Funding Need," for the American Federation of Teachers (AFT)... that could become a resource for President Barack Obama in considering improvements to school facilities" is described below.

"All ye who are heavy laden" - take heart!

President Barack Obama's inaugural speech focuses on rising to meet the challenge of our nation's current crises, "with hope, not fear" - among these, "failing schools" and the rising costs of healthcare. President Obama's clarion call to take individual and group action to solve problems, remembering the sacrifices of past Americans, can inspire those faced with overwhelming illness and crises caused by toxic mold exposures in homes, schools, and workplaces not to give up. As he indicated today, "this is not a path for the faint-hearted", but "rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things — some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom".

Contact President Obama and his team at http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/ to express your concerns about America's moldy schools and their impact on health and learning.

We encourage you to watch, read, and share President Obama's historic inaugural address, below (SMH).

"Recent research suggests that indoor mold poses a widespread and, for some people, serious health threat." (US General Accounting Office, 2008)

The GAO (USA General Accounting Office) Audit on Mold that took two years to complete is now posted and public, on the GAO site, as well as below (SMH).

"The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) is known as "the investigative arm of Congress" and "the congressional watchdog." GAO supports the Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities and helps improve the performance and accountability of the federal government for the benefit of the American people. -------------------------------

This groundbreaking report refutes the notion that mold is only a nuisance or minor allergen. It is a key document to use in any venue where one might wish to cite the serious nature of mold exposure - in our schools, homes, offices or other buildings. Parents with children in damp or moldy schools will be able to use this document to show that there is no safe level of mold exposure. Parents of students concerned about or harmed by mold exposures will want to use this document with their school districts, school boards, health departments, physicians, and attorneys. Teachers and school staff concerned about or harmed by mold will want to provide this document to their physicians, unions, local OSHA, health departments and attorneys.

Gone is the day when denials of the health effects of mold exposures are accepted. Mold remediation will improve with consistent direction from our government. People will be adequately warned of the health risks of indoor mold exposure.

Our sincere thanks to Senator Ted Kennedy for requesting this audit and to those who tirelessly lobbied for it. We hope this is the beginning of an era of greater accuracy, research, and consistency among the US gov't agencies, with regard to mold's health effects and its prevention, that will greatly improve the health of our nation. ‘Green’ Schools, Healthy Kids/ AFL-CIO: AFT PDF Print E-mail
Latest News

"U.S. Government Accountability Office studies show that some 15,000 schools in the United States suffer from indoor air that is unfit to breathe. In addition to greenhouse gas emissions, conventional building materials and furnishings release toxic chemicals, volatile organic compounds, such as formaldehyde, and other substances to the air inside the school.

Mold spores, common in deteriorating schools with leaky roofs, along with other biological organisms add to this polluted mix, triggering allergies, and are suspected of increasing new cases of respiratory diseases, particularly asthma, which is the most common chronic illness among children under age 15. Asthma also is the leading cause of student absenteeism in schools, accounting for more than 14 million missed school days each year, according to the AFT."
