County school officials say they are on top of the problem.
Reports of mold inside Andrew Jackson Middle are still making many parents and faculty members uneasy.

"There are many students in there that have problems, many have missed lots of days of school, teachers that are also missing a lot of school and the safety of everyone in this building is very important to us," said Nancy Vatalare, a substitute teacher at the school.

But county school officials say they are on top of the problem and that recent tests show their efforts are working.

"We replaced all the ceiling tiles in hallways and all the filters were changed in the air conditioners, we're scrubbing all the walls, looking at the roof for possible leaks and we'll be changing out the ceiling tiles as well,"  said school superintendent Dr. Ron Duerring.

The county school board sent out this letter last week about the latest round of testing, ut many parents say they still have a lot of questions.

"Is it all gone?  If they have cleaned and done all the things they say then is it all gone?  And is the air quality as good as it should be," said Debbie Carpenter, a parent at the schoo.

To help keep parents informed, the local school improvement council will hold a meeting Tuesday evening.

In the meantime, the school board vows to remain vigilant in stopping the spores from spreading.

"It's not being swept under the carpet.  We're not taking a back seat we're going above and beyond getting all the necessary, agencies, the right agencies involved," Duerring said.

Tiles, air filters replaced after mold found at middle school

Kanawha County school officials replaced ceiling tile and air filters throughout Andrew Jackson Middle after they discovered mold in July.
Kanawha County school officials replaced ceiling tile and air filters throughout Andrew Jackson Middle after they discovered mold in July.

Pinnacle Environmental Consultants Inc., conducted a limited indoor air quality sampling of the school on August 22. The microbial sampling was used to help determine total fungal concentrations in the affected areas.

Crews used air scrubbers to capture dust, dirt, and other air particles.  School officials say a second series of test results confirmed the cleanup was successful and mold levels were deemed below normal on Sept. 2.

Crews checked the air at Andrew Jackson a second time on Sept. 18. County maintenance director Terry Hollandsworth expects the results from that test to come back late today or early Wednesday.

School officials say they will continuously monitor mold and mildew levels at Andrew Jackson.

Sometime "in the near future," all ceiling tiles will be replaced and the entire school will be cleaned, according to a Kanawha County Schools news release. Hollandsworth said he is not sure when this would happen.

Workers will inspect the roof to check on drainage issues and determine whether it needs fixed.

They need to go to Bonham Elementary and test their air. Mold has been growing their for years due to the flooding. My kids attended Bonham and moved on. They were always fighting mold. Bonham needs a new school.

Just another example of the sad state of schools in West Virginia. Not only is the educational quality substandard; the buildings are, as well.
