Vista, CA: More school mold found
The Vista Unified School District says it is safe - we'd like to see the reports that prove this. Please read our District Testing articles and New Findings on Toxic Mold to understand why this may not be so (SMH).
Mold Discovered in More Classrooms
By Rory Devine
Mold has been discovered in two more classrooms in an elementary school in the Vista Unified School District. That brings to four the number of classrooms where mold has been found at Temple Heights Elementary School in Oceanside, after the entire school was tested.
The mold was found encapsulated in the dry wall, or on the surface behind the baseboard; it was never airborne, according to district officials.
One parent said she was" alarmed at first", but has taken her son to the doctor and "everything is okay". Diane Deem said she is glad the children were moved from the room immediately after the mold was first found January 8.
The Chief Business Officer from the district says "it was not dangerous." Donna Caperton said, "people with allergies would have symptoms, it was very low grade, but we don't taken any risks."
The students have been doing their class work in the multi-purpose room, a computer lab or two rooms set aside for reading and Special Education. All four classrooms have been given the all clear as far as the mold is concerned, but only three classrooms will be open to students Monday. Repairs to the fourth classroom may take another three weeks, according to the district.
The district blames leaky windows for the problem. It had problems with them years ago, sued the contractor and lost. The district says it will pursue litigation again in light of the discovery.
