ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTION—Designating the
month of September 2009 as National Indoor Toxic Mold
Awareness Month.
1 WHEREAS, People of all ages and backgrounds throughout the
2 world have developed illnesses because of exposure to indoor toxic
3 mold, and it is estimated that 500,000 deaths occur annually in the
4 United States as a result of such exposure; and
5 WHEREAS, Most molds produce mycotoxins, which are toxic
6 vapors created by mold spores, that are poisonous to humans and
7 animals, and have even been used as biological weapons in war; and

1 WHEREAS, Aflatoxins are mycotoxins that are among the most
2 carcinogenic substances known, and the United States Food and
3 Drug Administration has enforced regulatory limits on aflatoxin
4 concentrations in foods and feeds since 1965; and
5 WHEREAS, Mycotoxins enter the body through inhalation,
6 ingestion or contact with the skin and can result in a multitude of
7 symptoms, including, but not limited to, dermatitis, cough, rhinitis,
8 nosebleeds, cold- and flu-like symptoms, headache, general malaise
9 and fever; and
10 WHEREAS, Mycotoxin exposure can lead to toxic injury that
11 may include multiple potentially life-threatening illnesses, affecting
12 the skin and the nervous, vascular, respiratory, digestive,
13 reproductive, urinary and immune systems, as well as forming
14 cancers within the body; and
15 WHEREAS, Certain species of molds, referred to as “body
16 temperature molds,” can live and grow inside the human body,
17 causing recurring infections and numerous other health problems as
18 well as death; and
19 WHEREAS, Mycotoxin Toxic Exposure Injury is a chronic,
20 debilitating condition causing serious economic, employment,
21 housing, health, social and other consequences, including death; and
22 WHEREAS, While there is no practical way to eliminate all
23 molds and mold spores in the indoor environment, indoor mold
24 growth can be curtailed by controlling moisture and ensuring that
25 any damp or wet building materials and furnishings are cleaned and
26 dried within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth; and
27 WHEREAS, National Indoor Toxic Mold Awareness Month is an
28 opportunity to bring greater attention to the need for further
29 education and consumer awareness about molds and mycotoxins;
30 now, therefore, be it
31 RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, THE
32 SENATE CONCURRING, That the 75th Nevada Legislature designates
33 September 2009 as National Indoor Toxic Mold Awareness Month;
34 and be it further
35 RESOLVED, That the Legislature recognizes that by increasing
36 awareness about indoor toxic mold, we can prevent needless
37 hazardous conditions that take the lives of thousands every year and
38 adversely affect the health and well-being of many more.
