Crooms students win cash in national science contest
July 16, 2006
Three students from Crooms Academy of Information Technology in Sanford recently returned home with $3,500 each in savings bonds for competing in the national finals of the Army's 2006 eCybermission competition in Washington, D.C.
The "Cafeteria Croomies" team was made up of three ninth-graders: Stephanie Neu, Stephanie Rolon and Ron Krudo. Teacher Arthur Emens was the team adviser.
The savings bonds were in addition to $3,000 bonds each received for winning the regional competition.
eCybermission is a Web-based science, math and technology competition for students in sixth through ninth grade.
Students compete for regional and national awards by using their knowledge of science to solve problems in their community.
The Crooms students won for a project that was conceived after they suspected a high level of bacteria in their school.
They sought to prevent infection among students and teachers by testing selected areas of the school and found low bacteria but high mold counts.
The Cafeteria Croomies shifted their experiment to study mold and presented their findings to school administrators.
