KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- The parents of children at Carter Elementary brought the results of a petition drive over

building concerns to the Knox County School Board meeting Wednesday night.

The parents want a new school to be built. They say the school is old, in disrepair and is plagued with mold.

"We're very happy they're doing more testing," Belinda Martin says. "Our children need a healthy environment."

Within the past month, mold has been confirmed at Carter Elementary. Pictures from the group's Web site show some

of the problems inside.

"That's what we need to get the parents to stand behind us and stay behind us," one parent says.

On Wednesday night, the group presented the school board with a petition and packets of information including,

"Letters from parents that does have children sick caused from the mold," Martin says.

The group spoke with their school board member, Jim Williams. He says the recent mold testing needs to be studied

further.

"We didn't feel like it was comprehensive enough so we began yesterday with more tests and the results should be

available within the next two to three weeks," Williams says.

And Martin responds, "Two more weeks we can go, see what results we get and then fight it from there."

The petition includes 900 signatures to get Carter Elementary put back on the capitol improvement plan. If they can't

get that done, they'd like to get cleaners into the school to remove the mold.

Keep in mind, the school was built in 1938.
