An upset parent voiced her frustrations with the lack of resolution concerning mold found at two local elementary schools at the end of last school year.
During discussion of public matters not on the agenda, the parent addressed the Amador County Unified School District board at its Wednesday meeting. While the board is not legally allowed to comment during that time, Board President Mary Walser asked for an exception so district staff could explain their progress.
District staff reported that the portable classroom at Ione Elementary was considered clean but because of a persisting odor, the classroom remained empty over the summer and at the beginning of this school year until the room is again retested to ensure no mold has regrown.
Two portables at Pine Grove Elementary remain closed as well while school district maintenance staff survey ventilation systems and solve problems with condensation on the windows.
Last spring when the district first became aware of the mold growth in the Ione Elementary portable, one of the solutions was to create Indoor Air Quality plans, which are plans teachers filled out to identify any potential problems in their classrooms.
The district did not follow through with those plans over the summer, staff said, but met with maintenance staff and health services Tuesday to begin reviewing the surveys. The Indoor Air Quality plans have not yet been finalized by the health and environmental health departments.
Superintendent Mike Carey announced the district will soon set up a hotline for parents, students and staff to call to report any problems in buildings.
