Demond Fernandez Reports on Mold Growing in a San Antonio Middle School
Less than a week before classes start up, Judson ISD is trying to get rid of mold that’s growing on books, furniture and student lockers at one middle school.
Teachers at Kitty Hawk Middle school noticed the problem Monday, on their first day back. Tonight, the district is working to get rid of the problem; they say it’s now only affecting lockers and vinyl chairs in one building, building 700.
Contained or not, parents like Eva Bowen, say they’re still worried about sending their children to school in a moldy classroom.
“I'm concerned only because she does have sinus problems and I actually have one child who is allergic to mold,” says Bowen.
The district says all the rain this summer, has contributed to the problem.
“We had dehumidifiers going all summer. The rain coupled with a bad air conditioning unit got the humidity levels a little higher than they should be which probably caused that mold to grow,” says Sean Hoffman, JISD Spokesman.
The principal at Kitty Hawk Middle School denied News 4 WOAI’s request to go inside Building 700, but we were told teachers are being restricted from going in there, as well.
“We've had one independent company come in today and basically tell us ‘hey, this building is safe,’ but to be on the safe side, put some air scrubbers up and get a certified company to come out," says Hoffman.
Parents like Bowen say they’re relieved to know the district is trying to fix the problem.
“I'm really glad they are taking care of it and on top of it," says Bowen.
Judson ISD tells News 4 today’s air tests show the humidity levels are good inside the building right now. The district spokesman says an outside company will be back here tomorrow to clean all the surfaces inside the building.
