Colleges and university dorms are often cited in the news as being moldy. This article explains how Chapman College students (in Orange County, CA, USA) had to be relocated. It is troubling that misinformation was provided in the article about the dangers of the two molds found. Comments show that a Chapman student from 1995 reveals mold was present and the college didn't take action then.

Unreported water leaks led to growth, official says, forcing students to move into other rooms, hotel.

ORANGE – Chapman University students who were displaced from moldy dormitories are expected to move back to their dorms in the coming weeks, officials said.
Previous students' failure to report water leaks led to the mold outbreak and the displacement of about a dozen students this semester, said Mary Platt, a university spokeswoman.
Some students – who were supposed to move into Morlan and Pralle-Sodaro halls and Davis Apartments – were placed elsewhere on campus. Others preferred to stay with friends or relatives near campus, and a handful were placed in a nearby hotel.
"It's not new on a university campus," Platt said. "Whenever you have a situation with so many people in a building, there are leaks people don't report."
Officials said two types of mold were discovered in a few rooms during inspections before the students arrived on campus. Stachybotrys, which can become hazardous if disturbed, and Aspergillus, which affects those who are sensitive to mold, were found.
Chapman hired a company to clean out the mold and expects the work to be done this month.

Re two types of mold were discovered Stachybotrys, which can become hazardous if disturbed, and Aspergillus, which affects those who are sensitive to mold. Correction stachybotrys is an extremely dangerous toxin producer without being disturbed and aspergillus is another toxin producer that can cause illness and infection in previously healthy people. Whoever said the above is MINIMIZING the dangers, perhaps attempting to reduce the liability. Learn more at schoolmoldhelp org.

I lived in South Morlan Hall in 1995 and it was moldy then. They didn't do anything when it was reported so I have a hard time beliveing that all these students had water leaks and didn't report it. Some may not have but not all. Pralle-Sodaro was new when I was there and it still had problems.
