CLEVELAND -- Part of a Cleveland school building is sealed off and being tested, after workers discovered what could be black mold.
Last week, workers were tearing up a wooden floor in the gym of the Stokes Central Academy on East 40th Street, when they discovered damaged boards.
Channel 3 was given amateur video that shows some black and white substances on the wood. Some of the floor has been sealed, but other boards are left exposed. Children are not allowed in the gym but there are classes on that floor.
The Cleveland School District's Chief Operations Officer Dan Burns says, "If there is a condition dangerous to kids, it is a priority to us." He says the area is off limites until the district gets tests back on the samples. It should take a week.
Teachers are worried about students who have asthma in the building. They also say there is a lot of peeling paint, missing ceiling tiles and general disrepair in the building.
Teachers even asked a private environmental consultant to look at the gym floor. He says he suspects it is black mold, which can cause respiratory problems especially for children with asthma.
