(10/09/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - Students at a Tidwell elementary school will be on the move today because mold has apparently taken over their building.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We've been hearing so much about problems at Key Middle School in HISD. Today, the focus is on Tidwell elementary in the North Forest ISD, the latest school affected by mold.

Last Wednesday, officials ordered the removal of Tidwell students and staff after teachers complained of sickness, including fatigue and sore throat. So today, those children will instead begin attending nearby Hilliard elementary until the mold problems can be addressed.

Teachers had threatened to walk off the job when district officials decided to evacuate the school. Tidwell's principal had reported the mold several weeks back, citing mold in the library on books and in the carpet.

Some parents have said the district should have acted earlier. For now, 470 Tidwell students will stay at Hilliard, so the North Forest ISD can make sure the building is safe.

Tuesday morning, students from Tidwell elementary in the North Forest ISD will start classes at Hilliard. A mold problem forced Tidwell to shutdown without warning last week.

And, if a picture paints a thousand words photos obtained by 11 News speak volumes of the troubles at Tidwell. It appears the mold was at kids’ fingertips and over their heads.

Mold was found on walls, air conditioning ducts, bookshelves and concession areas of the school.
In one photo, mold has spread across stored books and paper. There was even mold in the concessions room.

Last week, 11 News was there as parents raced to pick up their kids when mold problems closed Tidwell down. Now, with the photos we are getting our first glimpse of what those problems looked like.

The pictures were attached to the actual mold report that was sent to North Forest ISD.

In the temporary buildings, wood rot and mold prompted experts to recommend closing them until they can be fixed or removed. The report stated these buildings were not suitable for children or teachers.

Something NF ISD agreed with. The school is closed and Tidwell kids will get a fresh start at A.G. Hilliard.
